My Story

I never imagined I would one day become an artist but after working in public relations and marketing for some years I decided to reevaluate my life. I knew that God was pulling me into a new direction and I spent over a year praying and devoting myself to finding out what that could be. 

One day I was inspired to go out and pick up a canvas and oil paints. Without any formal art training, I began to spend hours creating and was consumed with my new passion for painting with guidance from the Holy Spirit.

I was having so much fun and was feeling excited with my newfound creativity that I never considered turning my endeavor into a business until I bought a three-story townhome downtown Memphis and thought the bottom floor would make a beautiful gallery!

Sue Layman Designs was born.

I am so blessed that my pieces can now be found across the country in art collections, homes, restaurants, movie theaters, physicians' offices, and hotels.

My Artwork

I am self-taught and have a passion for contemporary art. My passion is reflected through my work as oil and canvas or paper (or sometimes even the wall!) are combined with empowering brilliant colors and daring geometric shapes placed in unique arrangements that create unique dimensions.

When I paint I create a story.

As you can see in my work I love using eye-catching shapes and harmonious colors. I start each piece by mixing together paints to create new colors that I use to engulf the shapes. Each shape is designed to create a symbol to express a point or an explanation.
