Three unique and fun things to do in the South Main Historic Arts District

September 16, 2021

The South Main Historic Arts District is one of Memphis’ crown jewels. From world-class eats to rich history – there are so many exciting things to discover in the area. Here are my top three suggestions for fun and unique things to do next time you visit South Main.

Get inspired at Sue Layman Designs Gallery.
Of course, no South Main visit is complete without a stop at my gallery! As you step inside the unique space, you’re instantly surrounded by bright, whimsical paintings that will spark your creativity. I always love to hear the different ways guests interpret my paintings. We all see something different, so I love swapping interpretations. There is beauty in that, isn’t there? As an artist, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing how your art impacts others. Set up a private tour for you and your out-of-town visitors by calling me at 901-409-7870.

Catch a movie at the MALCO Powerhouse Cinema.
Located in a meticulously restored 1914 railway powerhouse, the Malco Powerhouse Theater is an experience. With seven screens complete with luxury reclining seats, you’ll be well on your way to having a perfect afternoon or evening on South Main. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat or order one of their specialty cocktails, which can be enjoyed while you watch the movie! For a fun twist, play a game of eye-spy while you wait on your food. Two of my original paintings hang inside the space.

Shake up your plans with some shuffleboard.
Shuffleboard is not the first activity that comes to mind when you think of a fun night on South Main, but Longshot will make you reevaluate. While the delicious drinks and dishes are certainly a highlight, the main attraction is the restaurant’s shuffleboard tables. Located underneath the Arrive Hotel on Butler Avenue, this fun spot is just a five minute walk away from my gallery. Enjoy a friendly game – or a competitive one – to end your day on South Main!

The South Main Historic District is one of the best neighborhoods Memphis has to offer, and I’m so proud to be a part of its community. To learn more about my story and my gallery, visit my website or call me at 901-409-7870 to schedule a private gallery tour.
